IIT Madras, IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures Announce ₹450 Crore First Close of IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I
Fund reaches first close within three months of SEBI approval; deploys nearly ₹55 crore across four deep-tech startups and targets a 25-company portfolio

Chennai, September 26, 2026: IIT Madras, IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP) and Unicorn India Ventures have announced the ₹450 crore first close of the IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I, a deep-tech-focused investment fund created to support intellectual-property-led and engineering-intensive startups emerging from India.
The announcement was made in the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The first close was achieved within three months of receiving SEBI approval, while the fund is targeting its final close by December 2026. The overall fund was announced in February 2026 with a proposed corpus of ₹1,000 crore, including a ₹400 crore greenshoe option. Press release_fund first close_…
Alongside the fundraising milestone, the fund announced that it has already deployed nearly ₹55 crore across four deep-tech startups — Hathor, Quanstra, Triolt Energy and Carbelim — marking the beginning of its investment programme. Press release_fund first close_…
Four deep-tech startups receive first investments
The first four companies selected by the fund operate across space technology, quantum technology, advanced batteries and carbon capture.
Hathor, a Chennai-based space-tech startup, is developing specialised semi-cryogenic and cryogenic rocket engines for companies building small and medium satellite launch vehicles.
Quanstra, based in Delhi, is a quantum deep-tech company developing single-photon detection systems and advanced quantum instrumentation for scientific research as well as emerging industrial quantum applications.
Triolt Energy is developing high-performance lithium-ion battery cells designed specifically for applications including drones and fast-charging electric mobility.
Carbelim, meanwhile, is building bio-integrated carbon capture and air-purification systems based on proprietary microalgae technology. Press release_fund first close_…
The investments underline the fund’s stated strategy of backing technology businesses where substantial engineering development, intellectual property and longer commercialisation cycles may require patient capital.
Focus on six deep-tech sectors
IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I plans to focus primarily on six areas where its managers believe Indian startups can build globally competitive technology businesses.
These include defence technology, space technology, semiconductors, manufacturing technology and robotics, AI infrastructure and generative AI, and health technology. Press release_fund first close_…
According to the release, prospective investments will be evaluated on three major strategic parameters: global export potential, strategic import substitution and sovereign technological advantage. Press release_fund first close_…
The fund expects a significant portion of its portfolio to consist of early-stage deep-tech companies that have reached approximately Technology Readiness Level 3 to 4, with an average investment cheque of around ₹15 crore to ₹25 crore per startup. Its longer-term target is to create a portfolio of approximately 25 companies. Press release_fund first close_…
Combining research ecosystem with institutional capital
The fund brings together IIT Madras and IIT Madras Research Park’s research and startup ecosystem with the investment and capital mobilisation capabilities of Unicorn India Ventures.
Prof. Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Director, IIT Madras, said the institution has developed an ecosystem that has helped nurture a number of deep-tech companies and support their progress across technology-readiness levels.
He said the partnership with Unicorn India Ventures is expected to give startups not only access to patient capital but also strategic guidance required to scale their businesses. He also highlighted the speed at which the fund achieved its first close and expressed confidence that the initiative could help build a portfolio of high-potential Indian deep-tech companies. Deep-tech companies typically face a different financing journey from conventional digital businesses. Technologies in fields such as semiconductors, space propulsion, robotics, quantum systems, advanced batteries and biotech can require extensive R&D, validation, prototyping and testing before achieving large-scale commercial adoption.
The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund’s investment strategy is designed around this longer development cycle, with an emphasis on engineering-heavy companies creating defensible intellectual property.
India moving from deep-tech promise to scale
Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing Partner, Unicorn India Ventures, said India is entering what he described as a defining decade for deep-tech startups, with the ecosystem moving from technological promise towards commercial scale.
He said the collaboration with IIT Madras and IIT Madras Research Park is intended to provide early-stage founders with both capital and strategic support to help build globally competitive businesses from India.
“With the ₹450 crore first close and our four investments already made, we intend to continue building a portfolio of high-potential deep-tech ventures that can create significant technological and economic value,” Majumdar said in the release. Press release_fund first close_…
The fund also views deep technology through the lens of India’s broader technology sovereignty objectives, particularly in areas where domestic intellectual property could reduce dependence on imported technologies while opening global export opportunities.
Patient capital for engineering-intensive startups
Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO, IITM Research Park, Incubation Cell & RTBI, said India possesses the scientific and engineering capabilities required to build globally competitive technologies, while the growing entrepreneurial ecosystem increasingly requires appropriately structured patient capital.
According to him, the fund is intended to bring long-term capital into the IIT Madras innovation ecosystem and help scale IP-led businesses with international potential.
He added that the broader ambition extends beyond individual startup investments to strengthening India’s technological capabilities, supporting greater self-reliance in critical sectors and positioning the country as a source of frontier technologies globally. Press release_fund first close_…
Portfolio target of 25 startups
Following its ₹450 crore first close, IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I will continue identifying IP-driven and engineering-intensive deep-tech companies across India.
The fund aims to build a portfolio of around 25 startups and is currently backed by IIT Madras alumni as well as prominent family offices. Institutional investors and banks are expected to participate as the fund progresses towards its proposed final close by the end of 2026. Press release_fund first close_…
Unicorn India Ventures, which will act as fund manager, also plans to build a co-investment mechanism that can mobilise additional capital beyond the primary fund corpus. The strategy is intended to provide portfolio companies with access to follow-on capital as their technologies move through development and commercialisation stages. Press release_fund first close_…
IIT Madras Research Park’s deep-tech ecosystem
IIT Madras Research Park describes itself as India’s first university-based research park, established to connect academic research with industry and accelerate commercialisation of deep technologies.
Spread across more than 11 acres and 1.2 million square feet, the Research Park hosts more than 250 research-driven companies and global corporations, 15 centres of excellence and over 500 startups across various sectors and technologies. Press release_fund first close_…
This ecosystem provides startups and companies access to infrastructure, laboratories, IIT Madras faculty and researchers — potentially allowing research projects to move more effectively from academic development to commercial products.
IIT Madras itself has more than 650 faculty members and 10,000 students, according to the release, and supports entrepreneurship through academic programmes as well as the IITM Incubation Cell. Press release_fund first close_…
Unicorn India Ventures expands deep-tech investment platform
Unicorn India Ventures was established in 2016 by Bhaskar Majumdar and Anil Joshi as an early-stage investment platform focused on emerging technology businesses.
Its first ₹100 crore fund invested across 17 companies, while its second fund, launched with a ₹300 crore corpus in 2020, invested in around 20 companies. The investment firm has also closed a ₹1,200 crore Fund III, exceeding its original ₹1,000 crore target, with a focus that includes semiconductors, space technology, medical diagnostics, AI infrastructure and digital platforms. The new IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I represents a deeper institutional collaboration between a major academic and research ecosystem and a specialised venture investment platform.
With the first ₹450 crore secured and the first four investments already announced, the next phase will centre on deploying capital into startups capable of translating Indian scientific and engineering research into scalable products, intellectual property and globally competitive businesses.
