Figma Launches Code Layers and New AI-Powered Features at Config India 2026, Deepens India Expansion
At its largest international Config conference, Figma unveiled Code Layers, Figma Specs, enhanced design systems and Payload CMS integration, while announcing an India-first AI partnership with Sarvam.

Bengaluru, October 15, 2026: Figma, the global collaborative design and product development platform, announced a major expansion of its AI-powered capabilities at Config India 2026, held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru. The company introduced Code Layers, Figma Specs, expanded design system capabilities and new integrations designed to bring design, development and artificial intelligence into a unified collaborative environment.
The event marked Figma’s first flagship Config conference in India and its largest international Config gathering to date, with more than 30,000 people registered to participate in person and virtually.
Led by Figma Co-founder and CEO Dylan Field, the announcements reflected the company’s ambition to transform its design canvas into a full-stack product development platform where designers, developers, product managers and AI agents can collaborate from initial concept to production.
Code Layers brings functional code directly into Figma’s design canvas
The introduction of Code Layers was among the major product announcements at Config India 2026.
The new capability enables teams to build, explore, edit and compare code-backed prototypes directly within Figma’s collaborative design canvas. Rather than moving between separate design and coding environments, teams can develop functional prototypes while maintaining shared visibility across the product development process.
Code Layers can be created by prompting the Figma agent, importing work from GitHub repositories or connecting external coding agents through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
The feature is launching in open beta, allowing teams to explore interactions, evaluate design decisions and move working prototypes closer to production.
Speaking about the evolution of the platform, Dylan Field said:
“Customers often tell us they prefer working together with their teams on the canvas rather than alone with coding agents in a terminal or IDE.”
He added:
“Figma was the first to introduce the multiplayer canvas for teams to design together. The next evolution is a full-stack creative canvas where teams and agents can build together, from idea to ship, in a visual-first way.”
The announcement comes as AI-powered coding tools increasingly change how software products are created. Figma’s approach seeks to preserve collaboration and design quality while making code generation and prototyping more accessible.
Figma Specs aims to connect product requirements, design and AI agents
Alongside Code Layers, Figma introduced Figma Specs, a collaborative environment designed to bring product documentation, visual designs and technical requirements together.
Figma Specs allows teams to embed design frames, diagrams, code layers and FigJam content directly within structured documentation.
By connecting written requirements with visual context, the feature aims to help teams communicate product intent more clearly and provide AI agents with better instructions during development.
The company also announced enhancements to its design system capabilities, including guidelines within published design libraries and the ability to import code sources.
These additions are intended to help AI agents generate components that follow established design patterns and maintain consistency across products.
Figma also previewed a centralized environment for managing design libraries, code libraries and guidelines in one place.
Payload integration expands Figma’s capabilities from design to deployment
Another significant announcement involved the integration of Payload, the open-source backend framework and content management system acquired by Figma in 2025.
The integration enables teams to connect applications built using Figma Make with Payload’s backend and content management capabilities.
Designers can build applications using real content, marketers can update that content through an administrative interface, and developers can customize applications using Payload’s open-source framework.
The development represents Figma’s broader move toward supporting the complete product lifecycle rather than focusing exclusively on interface design.
According to the company, Payload downloads have increased sixfold over the past 12 months.
Figma said the new capabilities will be rolled out over the coming weeks, with availability varying by feature.
Figma expands AI ecosystem with 20 new MCP partners
At Config India, Figma also announced 20 new MCP partners, including Meta Muse, OpenCode, Dia and India’s Sarvam AI.
The expanded ecosystem is designed to connect external AI coding agents with Figma’s design context, enabling teams to build products using existing designs, components and development workflows.
The company said these integrations would help reduce the fragmentation that can arise when individual team members use separate AI development environments.
Field emphasized the importance of bringing these capabilities together.
“The power of code layers, Figma Specs, Payload and everything we’re launching today comes from what you can do with them together, with your team.”
Dylan Field highlights India’s growing design leadership
India occupied a central position in Figma’s announcements, with the company identifying the country as its second-largest market globally by daily active users as of Q2 2026.
Addressing attendees at Config India, Field highlighted the importance of design as artificial intelligence makes software development increasingly accessible.
“In a world where code is becoming commoditized, design is increasingly the differentiator,” said Dylan Field, Co-founder and CEO of Figma.
Recognizing India’s emerging talent and expanding design ecosystem, he added:
“It’s incredible to see how much design leadership there is in India, and how much ambition there is in the next generation of designers as well.”
His comments underscored the growing importance of Indian designers, developers and product builders in the global technology ecosystem.
Figma’s presence in India extends across major enterprises and technology companies. According to the company, more than 40% of BSE 100 companies were using Figma as of Q2 2026.
Airtel, CARS24, Groww, Juspay, Myntra, Swiggy, TCS and Zomato are among the Indian companies using its platform to design and develop digital products.
Figma announces India-first AI collaboration with Sarvam
Strengthening its engagement with India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem, Figma announced an India-first MCP partnership with Sarvam AI.
The partnership will enable users to incorporate Figma’s design context into workflows involving Sarvam’s Indus, connecting Indian AI capabilities with collaborative product development.
Dr. Pratyush Kumar, CEO and Co-founder of Sarvam, said:
“We’re excited to partner with Figma in an India-first AI collaboration. By combining our expertise in building AI for India with Figma’s rich design context, we can help teams build higher quality products, reduce rework, and accelerate overall product development.”
The partnership is part of Figma’s wider MCP ecosystem, which includes integrations with development tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor and GitHub Copilot.
Figma expands India commitment with university education initiative
Beyond its product announcements, Figma unveiled plans to expand its Campus Leaders programme to India, marking the initiative’s first entry outside the United States and Canada.
The programme will provide university students with opportunities to organize design-focused events, develop leadership skills and build campus communities.
The inaugural Indian cohort is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with applications open until November 7, 2026.
The initiative complements Figma’s existing education programme, which provides eligible university students with free access to its professional design tools.
The company has also strengthened its local presence through Hindi-language product localization introduced earlier in 2026 and continued recruitment in India.
Config India 2026 brings global design and technology leaders together
The Bengaluru conference brought together designers, developers, entrepreneurs and creative professionals to explore the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence, design and software development.
The programme featured speakers including fashion designer Masaba Gupta, representatives of Gully Labs, and technology leaders Ashish Kashyap and Saptarshi Prakash.
With its focus on collaborative AI development, the event highlighted how product teams are moving beyond conventional design-to-development workflows toward integrated environments where ideas can be transformed into working products more quickly.
For Figma, bringing its flagship Config conference to Bengaluru represents a significant milestone in its international expansion and engagement with India’s technology ecosystem.
As AI-assisted coding becomes increasingly common, the company’s latest product developments suggest a strategic shift toward making design, code, content and AI agents work together within a shared environment.
The launch of Code Layers, Figma Specs and expanded backend capabilities, combined with the Sarvam AI partnership, positions Figma to play a broader role in how businesses and technology teams build digital products.
For India’s expanding startup and enterprise technology ecosystem, the announcements signal new opportunities for designers and developers to collaborate more closely, accelerate product development and bring digital experiences to market.
