Cursor, the AI coding platform developed by Anysphere, has launched Cursor Start, a subscription priced at ₹649 per month exclusively for India. The plan is significantly cheaper than the company’s standard US$20 monthly Pro subscription, making India the first market where Cursor has introduced dedicated local pricing.
The announcement comes shortly before SpaceX is expected to complete its planned US$60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, one of the largest acquisitions ever involving a venture-backed AI software company. The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter, subject to regulatory approvals.
According to Cursor executives, India has already become the company’s third-largest global market, while also recording its fastest growth in power users. The company’s Indian user base has more than tripled during the past year, encouraging management to prioritise local pricing before expanding similar strategies elsewhere.
Unlike promotional discounts designed to acquire customers temporarily, Cursor says the India plan has been structured to remain commercially sustainable. The lower subscription price is supported partly through the company’s increasing use of its own AI models, reducing dependence on more expensive third-party foundation models.
Investor confidence in Cursor has been driven by several factors beyond subscriber growth. The company has built strong adoption among software engineers, startup teams and Fortune 500 enterprises while maintaining a model-agnostic platform that allows developers to choose between AI models from multiple providers. That flexibility has helped Cursor differentiate itself as competition in AI coding assistants intensifies.
The planned SpaceX acquisition is expected to provide additional computing infrastructure, enterprise distribution and financial resources while allowing Cursor to continue operating independently until the transaction closes.

India, by contrast, combines rapid enterprise adoption with an enormous individual developer community. Price sensitivity remains higher, making localisation an increasingly important competitive factor. Companies that successfully balance affordability with advanced AI capabilities could establish stronger long-term market positions.
